M&G u3a Cyclists at Hayling Island

For our ride on 14th August (our last of the 2023-24 season) we travelled to Hayling Island. The weather forecast for the day was poor and it was drizzling as we drove down but the weather cleared and we had a fine day.

Seven of us started from a little car park just over the Haying Bridge. We cycled to the start of the Hayling Billy trail and then were off road, almost to the Southern shore.

Having reached the Southern shore we rode East until we could go no further, being blocked by the Chichester Harbour entrance. We retraced our steps until we located a Fish n’ Chip shop where we purchased our lunch then sat on the beach to eat it!

Then began our leisurely return ride where we encountered some of the entries in the Hayling Scarecrow competition, I for one have never seen a dinosaur scarecrow! :

On we went, passing the pretty little St Peter’s Church (12th century) until we reached the Northney Farm Team Room where we partook of well deserved teas and ice creams.

We did have one puncture, easily corrected in a field at Sam’s Sunflowers and caught a little too much sun (must remember the sun cream next time!) but overall a great day out enjoyed by all participants.

Our cyclists still only form two very small groups so new members to either the on or off road group will be warmly welcomed!
